Here is an excellent video from the UK Foreign Office on the importance of having travel insurance even when staying with friends or relatives. You really don’t want to be a burden on them incase things go wrong.
The last thing you want to do to a gracious host when staying with them is to become a burden on them, regardless of whether they are close relatives or friends. Things can go very wrong, very quickly, a simple case of food poisoning or an injury can costs in thousands of dollars. But despite this, most people ignore travel insurance when visiting friends and relatives.
These incidents are so frequent that the UK Foreign Office has made it a part of their “know before you go" campaign, video below.
